Awnings is a secondary covering attached to the exterior wall of a building to beautify and fill-over the required area that can be used for certain occasions. Typically composed of canvas woven of acrylic, cotton or polyester yarn, or vinyl laminated to polyester fabric stretched-out tightly over a light structure of aluminium, iron or steel.
Transparent material is used to cover solar thermal panels in the summer, but that must allow as much light as possible in the winter. Awnings are also often constructed of aluminium understructure with aluminium sheeting. These kinds of awning are used when a fabric awnings cannot withstand under snow loads or heavy wind.
Awnings are assembled on a building, may be above door, window or above the area along the sidewalk. The addition of columns to an awnings gives a structure to canopy, which is able to extent further from a building, as in the case of stores and hotel’s entrance. Many restaurant’s awnings are broad enough to cover over existing outdoor area for outdoor dining, parties, or reception.
In commercial buildings, awning is painted with information such as name, business and address. In some buildings awnings remain retracted against the building all winter long, because they are designed and build for those conditions

Its supports with arms that are angled back against the house or set vertically on the deck or patio floor. Its arms provide extra support and stability which some owners prefer in windy areas, and increase the awning’s versatility by making the attachment of certain accessories available.
Aluminium Awnings
Aluminium awnings is widely popular throughout the world, as it has many benefits such as cool temperature, can be cut and assembled to any size and have a usable life of well over 40 years. It is also tough and stable compared to other awnings. They are usually painted with a baked-on enamel paint.
Retractable Awnings
Retractable awnings are now becoming very popular in some countries, as it includes photo-voltaic cells or roll-able solar panels to generate electricity. Retractable awnings include the following types:
- Retractable patio cover system: These are waterproof and can be enclosed on the front and sides using solar shade screens.
- Retractable lateral arm awnings: These are new version of crank-up awnings. Tension arms and a roller bar are supported by a torsion bar, has square bars fitted into wall or fascia or roof mounted brackets that spreads the load to the wall or roof truss.
- Retractable side or drop arm awnings: These awnings are commonly used to shade a window, with a roller tube on the top, spring arms, and a motors, crank or tape-pull operator. It provides the best sun protection around the house.
